Postal Rates Increase Expected In May 2007

In a nationwide address via satellite, Postmaster General John E. Potter told Postal Customer Council members to prepare for the postage rate increase to take effect May 6. Potter made the announcement to an audience of 15,000 on National PCC Day.

On May 3, 2006, the USPS began a 10-month regulatory process when it filed a rate case with the Postal Rate Commission. The PRC is expected to make recommendations by March 2007. After which, the USPS Board Of Governors will vote on an implementation date.

"We have to be ready on May 6 if that is what the Board of Governors decide," Potter said. Potter did not give details of the "economic drivers" that he said make it necessary for the rate increase.
